Somehow my boy has convinced both his parents he will only sleep peacefully if rocking in his swing. The same swing I railed against purchasing, for fear he wouldn't like it and I would then be stuck with this behemoth of a contraption taking up precious space in my minimalist home. Glad I was wrong on that one. But I feared he had become too accustomed to sleeping in this thing, so today, having no confidence it would actually take, I put him in his crib. Now, two hours and sixteen minutes later, he's still dozing peacefully. Let's hope this sticks. I don't want to end up like Howard and Moira, with a nine-year-old who still sleeps in their bed.
Oh, and he's started smiling this week. Not quite on demand, but quite cutely.

Adorable! And very impressive that he took a long nap in his bed. My babies always preferred the swing or bouncy chair too.
So cute. Good to get him used to sleeping in his own bed, especially before he reaches age 9.
OMG, he's beautiful! Yes, definitely get him used to sleeping by himself now. I have a friend at work who allows her two-year old daughter in their bed every night, and she says she can't bear to ever let her sleep on her own. That child will be a spoiled reck sooner than later!
I must be feeling emotional today b/c your beautiful boy's smile brought tears to my eyes. :)
Thank you all for your kind words. But don't worry, he sleeps alone, just usually in his swing. Yesterday's crib nap clocked in at 3:08. Then later in a cradle for about two and a half hours. But he will never sleep in our bed with us.
Those swinging chairs rock. Though I did sometimes feel guilty about using them, wondering if my child would grow up unhappy and then complain to his psychiatrist, "My parents didn't rock me to sleep. They put me in a mechanical chair. A chair!" But I had to balance that against the need for my own sanity...
